1521756 Clamping die plates to pivotally separable die head parts H U BREDEMEYER [trading as PAUL TROESTER MASCHINENFABRIK] 4 Dec 1975 [5 Dee 1974] 49752/75 Heading B5A An extruder die head, e.g. for extruding tyre tread bands, comprises a pair of parts 3 which are each attached to the extruder barrel 1 at a pivot 14, permitting pivoted separation of the parts 3 for cleaning and withdrawing the extruder screw therebetween, with each part 3 having a replaceable die plate 4 which is clamped against its downstream face by a force which does not have a component perpendicular to the direction of extrusion so that deformation of the die opening is avoided. The force is provided by a hydraulic piston-cylinder motor 10, acting through a lever means 6 which may be pivotable about the pivot 14 or, as shown, comprise a pair of levers pivotable about a pivot 7 carried between a pair of extension brackets 8 of the head and with the free ends of the levers engaging the plate 4. The cylinder of each motor 10 is pivotally attached at 12 to the extruder barrel 1, with the piston pivotably attached at 11 between the pair of levers 6. Continued movement of each piston beyond a position releasing the die plate, serves to displace each die part 3 to its open position by the levers 6 either engaging the jaws of a hook attached to each die part, or by abutment with a stop 9, carried by each bracket 8. The die head parts 3 are clamped together in their closed position, by pivoting clamps (17), Fig. 2 (not shown), acting with a wedge action, in the axial direction of the screw 2, by means of respective piston and cylinder arrangements which may comprise the motors 10.
