Air is induced into combustion chamber 40 via an intake valve 32 and is caused to swirl, e.g. by a shroud on the valve, so that when fuel is injected from nozzle 34 the injection is into swirling air in cavity 38. The direction of swirl carries the rich mixture formed adjacent the nozzle 34 towards a spark plug 37 for ignition.
