Foamed polyurethane mattress resting on a batten support has at least the central transverse portion of the mattress provided at locations coinciding with the battens with inserts of square cross-section and made of foamed latex, pref. high quality foamed polyurethane and reinforced with leaf spring inserts.Inserts have a greater carrying strength whereby the sagging characteristics of used mattresses are avoided. Pref. the inserts are not connected along their faces opposite adjacent mattress material, the inserts being bonded solely to the overlying or underlying foamed layers.
