Catalysts for use in the production of hydrogen by reaction of carbon monoxide or gases containing carbon monoxide with steam are obtained by precipitation of copper oxides, hydroxides, and/or carbonates from solutions of copper salts by means of alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates on to natural or synthetic silicates having an average particle size of less than 100 m , in aqueous suspension at 10 DEG to 90 DEG C., followed by filtration, drying and subsequent reduction at 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. The catalyst may be shaped, e.g. pelleted and may be reduced with gases containing 1 to 20% carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen, which may be the gases to be converted. Chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, silver, barium, zinc compounds may be added to the catalyst during the production of the catalysts or subsequently.
