In a machine for moulding articles of expanded polystyrene &c. comprising a fixed mould carrier 5<SP>1</SP> and a plurality of movable mould carriers 5, 5<SP>11</SP>slidably mounted on guide rods 4 for movement by a ram 7, the carriers, when pressed together with the mould parts 21, 22 secured thereto, constitute closed chambers through which heating and cooling fluids can be passed. Pre-expanded polystyrene is injected into the moulds through pipes 35 and pumps 37 by means of an injector which automatically closes after filling. The polystyrene is foamed by steam at greater than 3 atmospheres pressure passing from steam lines 25, 26 into the space around each mould. Cooling water containing entrained compressed air then passes through connections 30 to cool moulded products 18, which can be ejected pneumatically on to a conveyer 45. The carriers 5-5<SP>11</SP> are connected by links 11 having slots 12 to receive pins 13 projecting from the sides of the carriers. Spring-biased washers (16) bearing on the links 11 (Fig. 4, not shown), control the opening and closing of the carriers. The carriers are supported on the rails 4 by bushes (10) secured to mounting eyes (8), Fig. 5 (not shown), at the corners of the carriers. The mould parts are clamped together by means of a cross-piece (39), Fig. 7 (not shown), which is rotatable about a spindle (41) by means of a pneumatic cylinder (40) so as to come between the fixed wall 3 and rollers (43) carried by support members (42) on the carrier 5<SP>11</SP>. Only part of each mould cavity need be utilized, the unused part being blanked off by blind parts. |
