Operating methods and details of a two-stage internal combustion engine are disclosed. First-stage cylinders accept a constant double charge of air, sufficient for burning the maximum allowed amounts of fuel in both first and second stages. Combustion chambers are separated from cylinders with connecting valves, first-stage chambers have measuring cells with spark ignition, second-stage chambers use auto-ignition. Fuel supplied directly to chambers using dual injectors giving separate control to each stage. Excess cylinder gases lower temperatures after combustion and retain heat. External cooling is reduced. Enlarged secondstage cylinder allows extended expansion of gases. Check valve in second-stage exhaust duct allows recovery of negative work input at light loads. Basic engine unit consists of two first-stage cylinders operating on a four-stroke cycle and one second-stage cylinder using a two stroke cycle. working alternately with the two first-stage cylinders. Methods of combining two or more basic engine units are also disclosed.
|
