Powder is added to the mould of a continuous casting plant by feeding the powder pneumatically into a mixer located between the bottom of a ladle and a casting pipe. The powder is pref. a metal added to cool the melt or for alloying molten steel, esp. using 0.1-3.0% by wt. of the powder in the melt. The powder pref. has a size of 0.02-3.0 mm. and is carried by Ar or N2, esp. using 1-30 litres of the carrier gas per kg. of powder. Used e.g. in the continuous casting of steel billets, where the metal powder cools the molten steel to permit a higher billet extn. speed raising productivity, and also improving the cast surface of the billet. The powder may also be used for alloying.
