<p>Industrial wastes with a high alkaline content are neutralised by mixing them with a gas such as CO2 in a nozzle. Their separate volumetric flow rates are such that the outflow velocity from the mixing chamber equals the characteristic sound velocity of the 2-phase mixt. The pressure of the mixt. is suddenly reduced on emerging from the chamber. If a non neutralizing gas was used, the mixt. now enters a neutralizing gas atmos. This procedure results in a uniform redn. of pH from say 14-7.5 or 2 with a much reduced amt. of gas and in a shorter time required for the reaction.</p> |
