<p>A sol. catalyst system for oligomerising >=3C liner alpha-olefins comprises a 1-4C alkyl aluminium halide (I) and an organo-halide cpd. (II), amt. of (I) being 0.1 wt% (based on total catalyst) and the ratio hal/Al being >=2.5/1. The oligomers are used as lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids. The above system leads to fast reaction rate, is sol. in the olefin monomer and so does not require as solvent, gives high conversion (e.g. >50%) and gives oligomers with a low content of high mol. wt. prods. and mainly in the desired 20-60C range. Cooling of the polymsn. reaction mixt. is not necessary. The oligomers have viscosity under >100, a low flow pt. and are stable to oxidn.</p> |
