Large composite slab formed of glued ceramic panels - has corrugated steel strips bearing on transversely deformed steel battens seated in dovetail grooves of panels

A large area composite slab (6) is made from a number of ceramic panel elements (4) with rear side dovetail-shaped depressions (2) accurately aligned together when they are glued at the edges and laid, rear side uppermost, on a processing bench. Pre-formed metal battens (1) of special steel are inserted in the depressions, and undulating steel strips (3) are laid on the battens to be joined to them by heat treatment. The battens are deformed crossways in the heat-treated areas so that their edges are brought into permanent force-locking contact with the adjacent depression surfaces. Strips and battens may first be given a coating of preserving material.
