A catalyst suitable for hydrocarbon conversion reactions is prepd. by (a) treating a calcined supported catalyst bearing oxides of (i) a Gp. VIII metal, esp. Ni or Co, (ii) a Gp. VI metal of Cr, Mo or W, and (iii) a Gp. IA metal esp. K in the presence of H2 for 4-16 hrs. at 950-1400 degrees F and (b) recovering the treated catalyst so formed. The catalyst may be used in dealkylation reactions, most esp. the conversion of toluene to benzene. In an example, a catalyst of formula 0.20 NiO:0.59 Ce2/3O:0.02 K2O:0.52 Al2O3 is supported on gamma-alumina and possesses a surface area of 231 metres per gram. |
