The mechanism regulates the tension in a paper strip, having a driving roller unwinding the strip from a roll, a driven roller feeding it into a machine, and a jockey roller between to control the tension. The jockey roller swings in opposition to a spring from the rest position to a predetermined end position. The rollers (3, 8) immediately preceding and following the jockey roller (5) are so mounted in relation to it that in its rest position it deflects the strip (2) through an angle greater than 30 deg. and in the end position through less than 180 deg.
