Polyolefin compsns. contain (1) a polymer or copolymer of ethylene and/or alpha-olefin or styrene, (2) a mixt. of (a) a Bi cpd. which can be Bi2O3, Bi2S3, inorganic or organic Bi salts, opt. contg. O2 or organometallic cpds. of formula BiR3 where R = 1-20 C alkyl gp. or aryl gp. and (b) a partly halogenated polymeric or non-polymeric, thermally unstable cpd. which, on heating decomposes with formation of the corresponding halogenated hydrocarbon. (a) is present in such amt. that the Bi content of the compsn. is 5 wt. % and partic. 0.5-3 wt. % while (b) amts. to 1-10 wt. %, calculated on the total wt. of the compsn. Compsns. are used for prepn. of self-extinguishing components. Amt. of fire retardant components of mixt. are considerably less than when formations contg. Sb2O3 are used. |
