The effluent conc. in a multiple effect evaporator heated by surplus steam produced by the reaction of ammonia on nitric acid soln. in the reactor. The nitrogen recovered is recycled to the reactor to form conc. ammonium nitrate soln. Effluent is specifically due to excess steam produced by the exothermic reaction of ammonia and 52-60% nitric acid. The process enables nitrogen to be recovered from the steam contg. about 0.4% N, without an extra heat input, and also reduces the N level of the effluent condensate to =100 ppm.
