The lock or latch includes a detector mechanism which gives warning of illegal entry. The mechanism is built into a staple box (1) and comprises an elastic electro-insulant buffer (9) and an electric contact (80). The buffer may prevent contact when at repose, and yields under pressure on the door (3) until the bolt (5) effects a contact. An electrical circuit is then completed and an alarm sounds. The detector can easily be appended to existing locks. The buffer may comprise a tubular rubber cap (9) with one end closed, is fixed by the open end to an internal wall of the staple (1), and locates opposite the bolt (5) when it enters the staple (1). The contact (80) is mounted inside the closed end of the cap (9). The contact (80) and the staple, (1) may be connected to a live wire (7) and an earthed wire (10).
