<p>Appts. for controlling the immersion depth of a measuring cartridge entering a melt, comprises a height sensor which detects the passage of the cartridge through the surface of the melt, and emits a signal restricting the further downward travel of the cartridge to a specific depth. The sensor includes a thermocouple detecting the sudden increase in temp. when the cartridge meets the melt. The thermocouple is pref. located on the base of the cartridge, which is fixed on the bottom end of a measuring lance; and the sensor emits a signal at an adjustable, pre-selected temp., esp. at min. 300 degrees C when the melt is steel. A limit switch is pref. used to reduce the downward speed of the lance to a slower, constant value, at which the thermocouple enters the melt. The measuring cartridge can always be immersed to a prescribed depth.</p> |
