1515823 1515823 Electro-depositing nickel-iron and tin M & T CHEMICALS Inc 2 Feb 1977 [4 Feb 1976] 04328/77 Heading C7B A can shell is formed by passing a ferrous strip or sheet stock continuously through first a Ni-Fe electro-plating bath then a Sn electro-plating bath to electro-deposit respective layers each 0À005 to 5 microns thick, and drawing and ironing. The Ni-Fe plating bath may contain nickel and ferrous sulphate or sulphamate with or without chloride and boric acid, with anodes of the separate metals Ni and Fe e.g. as chunks in Ti baskets covered with cloth or plastics bags. The Sn plating bath may contain stannous sulphate or fluoborate and sulphuric acid. Prior to plating the strip or sheet stock may be anodically alkaline cleaned, e.g. in hydroxide, silicate, borate, phosphate or Na alkyl sulphate solution to remove oil or grease, then immersed in acid e.g. HCl or sulphuric to remove rust. |
