The adjustable screening system for a window or door has an operating mechanism to move a series of screening wings from a withdrawn position to individual positions across the opening, and to swing them to the required angle. This involves two guide-rails on both sides and a series of paired runners gripping the wing ends. The locking device incorporates a start element (15) on each runner (6) and on the support elements (28) in the guide-rails, the latter elements being set across the rails, with one lying in the slide track (14) of each individual start element. The support elements are distributed over rail length in such a way that each wing (5) is held in a prescribed individual setting when a start element fits on its allotted support element.
