1520289 Bonding tread strips to tire bodies BANDAG Inc, 22 Oct 1975 43115/77 Divided out of 1520288 Heading B7C An apparatus for use in bonding a procured tread strip 116 to a tire body 110 by means of an interposed vulcanizable bonding layer 118 comprises a vessel 10 for receiving the assembly 12 of tread strip, bonding layer and tire body, resistance heating elements 65 for heating the interior of the vessel, a vent 26 communicating with a vent conduit 20 connectible to the interior of a cover 122 applied over the tread strip, a fluid supply manifold 44, an inflation conduit 30 connected at one end to the manifold and connectible at the other end to the interior of the tire body, and a pressure differential check valve 42 by way of which the manifold is communicated with the interior of the vessel. The pressure differential check valve 42 maintains the pressure in the vessel at a lower value than the pressure in the inflation conduit 30, when pressurized fluid is supplied to the manifold 44. In use of the apparatus, elastic rings 140 may be disposed in tread grooves 120 of the tread strip. The presence of rings 140 is said to reduce the possibility of distortion of the tread strip during the bonding operation. |
