1494090 Coating/impregnating polymer compositions DOW CHEMICAL CO 15 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 49551/74 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division B2] Aqueous compositions useful for coating and impregnating applications comprise 10-50 wt. per cent of a self-crosslinkable, water-soluble or colloidally dispersible interpolymer of (i) at least one of (a) a monovinylidene aromatic monomer in an amount up to 40 mole per cent and (b) a hydroxyalkyl ester of anα,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in an amount up to 50 mole per cent; (ii) 2-20 mole per cent of anα,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (iii) 0-70 mole per cent of an alkyl ester of anα,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (iv) 3-80 mole per cent of a 1 : 3 molar adduct of hydroxyethyl acrylate and propylene oxide or butylene oxide, an alkylene glycol ether ester of anα,#-ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and/or an alkylene glycol ether of an ethylenically unsaturated alcohol, and (v) 0-24 mole per cent of another ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the interpolymer having a molecular weight of 3000 to 100,000. The compositions may optionally include an oxidative metal curing catalyst, e.g. cobalt naphthenate, or a thermosetting resin which can crosslink with polyols, e.g. polyepoxides or melamine resins such as methoxymethyl-melamine. Other optional additives include fillers, pigments and stabilizers. Component (i) a of the interpolymer may be styrene or an alkyl, chloro or bromo derivative thereof, methoxystyrene or vinylnaphthalene. Components (i) b, (ii) and (iii) may be (derived from) acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, fumaric, maleic, citraconic or aconitic acid. Examples of component (v) are (meth)acrylamide, fumaramide, (meth)- acrylonitrile, vinyl and vinylidene halides, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers and vinyl ketones. The compositions are useful for forming waterresistant coatings on substrates such as paper, leather, wood, metals, glass, ceramics, concrete and textiles. The interpolymer compositions are suitably prepared by polymerizing an appropriate monomer mixture in an organic solvent and possibly in the presence of a chain regulator, and subsequently removing the solvent and dissolving or dispersing the polymer in water, together with desired additives.
