<p>New solid sodium and potassium 4-hydroxy mandelate monohydrates are pure intermediates for prepn. of 4-hydroxyphenylacetamide, an intermediate for the beta-blocker atenlolo. The cpds. are prepd. by reaction of phenol with glyoxylic acid in presenc of NaOH or KOH, then precipitating the solid salts by adding a simple Na or K salt, esp. NaCl or KCl, at pH 5-6. Pref. reaction temp. is 30-40 degrees C using a 50-100% excess of phenol.</p> |
