A blood collection and sampling apparatus 9 is characterised by the provision of a frangible housing 20 consisting of two sections 21, 22 interconnected by a neck portion 23 having a line of weakness 24. The apparatus comprises a container 10, a tube 14 connecting the container to section 22, which has a passage therethrough in which a hollow needle (40) (Fig. 2) is disposed, the base of the needle being fixed in section 21, and a tube 14<SP>1</SP> joining section 21 to a cannula 37. In use, cannula 37 is inserted into the vein of a donor and blood is tranfused through the tubing into container 10. When the container has been filled, the tubes 14, 14<SP>1</SP> are sealed e.g. by clamps and opposite torque is applied to each of the two sections of housing 20 to fracture the housing along the line of weakness and separate the sections. The needle (40) is then inserted through a rubber stopper sealing an evacuated sample tube and tube 14<SP>1</SP> is unsealed to permit blood from cannula 37 to flow into the sample tube. To facilitate separation of the sections, a removable sleeve (50) (Fig. 2), preferably of plastics material having a low coefficient of friction, is mounted on needle (40).
