The plant used comprises a vertical cylindrical tank for processing liq. culture medium. At the lower end of a coaxial chimney of annular cross-section, a perforated, coaxial ring bubbles gas up the annular chimney passage between hollow, cooling jacket walls. In vertical cross-section, the annular chimney passage is now formed in the shape of a Venturi passage, i.e. a short convergent section followed by a narrow throat and a long divergent section. The gas ring is in the short convergent section below the throat of the chimney passage. Above the top of the annular chimney, the tank is pref. sealed over with a centrally drained partition fitted with foam-trapping exhaust vents located on a pitch circle coaxially aligned with the top of the annular chimney.
