The lamp standard for illuminating public highways is made of tapered steel tubes of polygonal cross section. The wires connecting the lamp to the underground supply cable are housed inside the standard and an inspection hole for access to these wires is provided at a convenient working height. The inspection cover (5) fits in the hole in the wall of the standard (2) so that it is flush with the outer surface. A U-shaped fitting (6) is attached to the inside wall and supports a nut (9) with a spring clip (15) attachment. The cover (5) has smaller U-shaped fittings with a slot (11) for a bolt (14). A hole (16) in the cover provides access for a screw-driver for tightening the bolt.
