The orbiting roller follows a circular path about a progressively advancing guide-vehicle. The roller and the guide are self-propelled. the direction of the roller is controlled by a sensor which follows a component of the guide-vehicle. The transmission system may include a drive shaft which is incorporated in the guide-vehicle and transmits drive to the axle of a train of drive-wheels. A drive bar of adjustable length may couple the roller to the guide vehicle, and may also be locked against motion relative to the drive shaft.
