Spherical pressure vessels are assembled from twin hemispherical shells which butt together at their rims, where the joint is covered by an internal band and by an external bandage where the latter is made of layers of mat and of cloth impregnated with (polyester) resin and varying in width to decrease progressively in overall thickness from the level of the joint to the borders of the bandage. The inner most layer of the bandage is of mat 50-75% of the overall bandage width. The adjacent layer is of cloth 25-50% of the overall bandage width, with successive layers getting wider until the outermost layer, which is of cloth, is of the overall width of the bandage. Used for reservoirs for holding carbonated drinsk, esp. for spheres of approx. 1.25 m dia. to be assembled in hotel cellars for storing beer at working pressures 15 atm. The cloth layers enhance the hoop strength of the joint biaxially. The mat layers enhance the shear strength of the joint. |
