A hydromechanical packet for well consists of an elastic packing which is compressed hydraulically by a piston, locked in the compressed position by a serrated ring on a serrated surface. The packer is released mechanically by first breaking a shear pin on an internal cone for a split nut with an external cone, and by applying a pull on the prodn. tubing on which the packer is suspended. The body of the is surrounded by an auxiliary sleeve on which the elastic packing is arranged. This is compressed and sealed against the casing surrounding the packer by the piston, when the hydraulic or pneumatic pressure exerted on it is big enough to break th shear pin. A lock follows this movement and its teeth engage with the teeth of the serrated surface of the body to keep the packing compressed. This keeps excessive torsional leads away from the prodn. tubing during the release of the packer. The compression does not depend on the load of the tubing.
