Cold-rolled high-purity hard aluminium foil yields a larger increase in effective surface after electrolytic etching than the commercially available soft annealed foil generally used. After etching the foil is subjected to heat treatment in an oxygen containing atmosphere at a temp. of at least 200 degrees C but preferably in the range 400 degrees C - 650 degrees C for a controlled time which depends on the temperature. The foil is then subjected to anodic oxidation to give the dielectric oxide layer.
