A metallic bis-ylid complex is obtd. by reacting a bis (methyl di-(organyl)-phosphoranylidene methane which has formula (CH3)R1R2P=C=PR1R2(CH3) in which R1 and R2, identical or different, are 1-4C alkyl, phenyl or tolyl, and is pref. (CH3)3P=C=P(CH3)3, with a mono-, di or trivalent metal cpd., pref. of Li, Au, Mg, Zn, Cd, B, Al, Ga, In, Tl, Ni, Pd, or Pt. Metal cpds. used are, e.g., MR2, where M is Zn or Cd and R is CH3 or C2H5; CH3AuP(CH3); (CH3)3Ga; MX2, (CH3)3P 2MX2 or (CH3)2AuX 2, where M is Ni, Pd or Pt and X is Cl, Br or I. The metallic bis-ylid complex is used as a (co)catalyst for the polymerisation of olefins.
