The flow of exhaust from an engine is impeded by the friction caused by carbon deposits. To keep the flow resistance constant a flap valve with adjustable resistance is used. The flap valve (4) is mounted by means of a clip (2) on the end of the exhaust pipe. The hinge point (3) of the flap is outside the pipe diameter. A counterweight (5) is mounted on the flap, by means of which the force required to open the flap can be adjusted. A few holes are drilled in the flap, so that some gas can escape when the flap is fully closed.
