1450162 Sliding clasp fasteners YOSHIDA KOGYO KK 31 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 41137/73 Heading E2S A sliding clasp fastener comprises a pair of oppositely-disposed stringer tapes T 1 , T 2 each carrying along their respective inner longitudinal edges a row of interengageable fastener elements E and a slider S arranged to move along the inner longitudinal edges to open and close the fastener, each of the stringer tapes consisting of a first group of threads 12 which are made of a textile, or non-soluble, material and a second group of threads 13 which are made of thermoplastic material, the second group of threads being present at least at a portion of the tape corresponding to a tape end to be cut and being melted, whereby the threads of said first group are held against fraying at the cut end of the tape entirely by thermoplastics material from said second group of threads 13 fused to, and forming a unitary bond with, said first group of threads 12 across the full tape width and thickeners S. As shown in Fig. 1 a row of coiled fastener elements E, is stitched at 11, to each of the tapes T 1 , T 2 which are joined by an end stop P, the warp threads 12 being made, e.g. of cotton, and the weft threads T3, at least at the end portions 14 of the tapes, being formed of a thermoplastic resin such as polyester. An apparatus Figs. 9, 10, not shown, for cutting intermittently fed, continuous fastener tapes and melting the thermoplastic threads (13) at predetermined intervals to form tapes of the required length with reinforced tape ends comprises a forming die (16) and a cooperating, vertically-reciprocable, ultrasonic horn (17) having a cutting blade (17b). In a modification, Fig. 3 not shown, the weft threads (13) are melted on one side only of the tapes. Fig. 5 shows a warp-knitted stringer tape consisting of wale-forming threads 18, tricot stitches 19, and laid-in lapping threads 20, the latter alone being made of thermoplastic material. The reinforcement (14) may extend along an element-free gap (21), Fig. 6 not shown.
