In a cupola furnace 1, the side charging hopper 2 is provided at its lower inner side with exchangeable metal plates 3, at its upper part with a heat-resistant arch 17 and has its mouth closable by a pivoted hopper comprising two side plates 9, substantially in the form of segments of circles, interconnected by a flat plate 15 and a curved plate 16. The pivoted hopper is counterbalanced by a weight (12, Fig. 2, not shown), carried by a lever (11) which is secured to the hopper journals (10), such that in the normal position plate 15 is disposed substantially horizontally and plate 16 covers the mouth of the side hopper 2, whereas upon depositing a charge on plate 15, the hopper swings downwardly allowing the charge to slide down the flat plate into the side hopper. A further lever (13), likewise secured to the journals and carrying a check weight (14), is provided for manual operation of the hopper. |
