The needles for use in a knitting machine are fitted with >=2 wires lying over each other, held together by >=1 web. A needle butt is fitted to one wire opposite the other wire sliding in a groove of the needle bed. The butt lies between the legs of the two wires and the hook of the needle. A unit is provided to act on two planes in relation to the needle bed, to act on the wire carrying the butt to position that wire and the butt in relation to the sliding plane of the other wire. Therefore the butt can be positioned as required in the various settings of the needle relative to the plane on which the bottom wire slides. The design allows the butt to be placed in the inoperative mode on a momentary halt in the needle's movement, and reduces the risk of needle fatigue which could affect the quality of the knitted fabric.
|
