Continuous casting of spheroidal graphite cast iron - involves the controlled cooling of an extruded profile

Spheroidal graphitic cast iron is cast continuously from a ladle whose outlet orifice is provided with a die imparting to the casting a desired profile of straight section. Part of the length of the profiled casting leaving the ladle is thermally insulated until it has fallen to a temperature of between 1050 degrees C and 950 degrees C. The profile is then subjected to a controlled cooling which may be accelerated, until the profile temperature is 750 degrees C. The procedure enables profiles to be obtained, without recourse to exterior heating, with good mechanical properties and having a relatively homogeneous structure.
