Exhaust silencer for IC engine - has longitudinal division with inlet and discharge pipes opening in opposite compartments

The silencer has a cylindrical body (10) closed at both ends by circular walls (11, 12). The gas inlet pipe (13) enters through one end wall and the discharge pipe (14) leaves through the other. A perforated internal wall (17) supports both pipes inside the silencer and divides the silencer into two spaces (16, 15). The inlet pipe (13) passes through this wall and terminates in the space (16) on the further side. The outlet pipe (14) opens from the other space (15). The inlet pipe reduces in dia. at its end (18) and is closed by a porous plug (19). It has bypass holes (20) opening into the space (15) which it traverses.
