<p>The device is for testing the cylinders of four-stroke i.c. engines for loss of compression includes an air pump (1) consisting of a piston (4) operated manually by a handle (2) and a holder (6) for a smoke cartridge (7). Coupled to the pump by way of a valve (5) is a pressure vessel (3) with a closed manometer (9). A connecting tube (8) has a threaded end (10) to permit the testing device to be attached to the sparking plug hole in the cylinder head. The connecting tube may have a hand-operated valve (11). To test the cylinder, the inlet and exhaust valves are closed and the cylinder is primed with smoke-charged compressed air which is visible at the points at which leaks occur.</p> |
