Powdery or granular materials are cooled, heated and/or sprayed with liquid or fused materials, by introducing them at the top of a cylinder as a vortex with a vertical axis. A descending gas stream takes them along through a spraying zone. Finally, an ascending counterflow can be adjusted to control the sizing action and/or the residence time. The dissipation of heat is thereby facilitated (if cooling is required). Uniform spraying is ensured and the spray nozzles do not become clogged. The residence time can be easily adjusted and re-crystallisation after packaging is eliminated. Used for mixing of milk powder, starch, vitamin prepations, baby food, detergents, paints; spraying fat on skimmed milk powder.
