Speed limiter for combustion engine has a switch in the primary circuit of an ignition coil where the switch is controlled according to the engine speed. The secondary circuit contains a spark gap. An electronic short-circuit switch acts to eliminate the spark generation on exceeding a limit speed. The short-circuit switch is in parallel with the switch section of the controllable switch in the primary circuit. A control circuit is fitted to the switch and this influences the storage value of a capacitive store according to speed-proportional signals. The storage capacitor is connected with the control electrode of the electronic short circuit switch via a threshold stage.
