A rubber composition comprises a solution polymerized 1,4-polybutadiene rubber peptized to a Mooney ML-4-212 DEG F. viscosity between 10 and 25 with a monofunctional monocarboxylic acid which is a straight chain aliphatic acid having from 6 to 14 carbon atoms, a branched chain aliphatic and having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms, a cyclo-aliphatic acid having from 5 to 18 carbon atoms, or an aromatic acid having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms. Preferred amounts of acid are from 0.5 to 10 parts per 100 rubber while hexanoic, octanoic, decenoic, 2-ethyl hexanoic, 2 - ethyloctanoic, isocaproic, 2-octenoic, 2-decenoic, 2-4-dodecadienoic, 2-4-decadienoic, naphthenic, 3-dimethyl-4-methyl-1-cyclopentyl acetic, benzoic, p-tertiary-butyl benzoic, o-, m- and p-toluic, phenylacetic, and cinnamic acids are specified. The composition may also include carbon black or silica. |
