Injectable Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine - for preventing atrophic rhinitis and turbinate atrophy in pigs

Parenterally injectable dosage vaccine for protecting animals against bordetella bronchiseptica infections consists of an adjuvant and 109 to 1011 of killed whole cells of Bordetella bronchiseptica ATCC 31124. Although the vaccine does not give complete protection against bordetella bronchiseptical itself, it does prevent the associated debilitating turbinate atrophy in pigs. It may be administered to the piglets or to the breeding sow before ferrowing. It is even effective in piglets under four weeks old. ADmin. is at intervals of >=5 days and may be intramuscular or subcutaneous. To prepare the vaccine freeze-dried Bordetella bronchiseptica ATCC 31124 is incubated at 36-38 degrees C on a medium consisting of tryptose phosphate broth and the recovered cells are killed without disruption of the walls using formaldehyde (0.2%) or thimerosal (1:104 final concn.). The final cell concn. may be 109-1011 cell/ml.
