The polybrominated bisphenoxyalkanes of formula I - the symbols are defined in Claim 1 - are obtained, with yields exceeding 77 % and without splitting of the phenoxy-alkylene bonds, when a corresponding phenoxyalkane, which may already carry part of the Cl and/or Br atoms of the desired product, is polybrominated with an excess of bromine chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid and of an inert solvent capable of dissolving all the participants of the reaction. The bromine chloride used is a mixture of Cl, Br and BrCl in equilibrium. The reaction is comparable with a Friedel-Crafts synthesis. <IMAGE> |
