Novel symmetric and asymmetric basic cpds. free from sulphonic acid gps. or mixtures of such cpds., are of formula (I):In the formula R= 1:4-phenylene or 2:7-fluorene or a gp. of formula (II) or (III): Z is a bridging gp. contg. imine ketone or sulpho gp. R1 is H, opt. branched opt. substd. alkyl or -NR7R8; R2 is H, opt. branched, opt. substd. alkyl or an alkoxy gp; R3=halogen or opt. substd. alkyl or alkoxy; R4=R3; R5=H or opt. substd. alkyl; R6=opt. substd. alkyl; X=H, halogen, or opt. substd. alkyl or alkoxy; n=1,2,3 or 4; Y=halogen, -NH-CH2-CH2-OH or -N(CH2-CH2-OH)2; W=halogen or -NH-CH2-CH2-OH; R7 and R8 are each opt. substd. alkyl; A+ is an anion; R1-R8 may be substd. by those substituents, usual in basic azo chemistry, and R is pressed in the para- or meta-pos. to the azo gps.).Used for dyeing paper yellow shades, fast to light, but changing to tone-on-tone shades after prolonged exposure. The coloured paper is wet fast, not only to water but also to milk, fruit juices, sweetened mineral waters, and to alcoholic beverages. (I) may also be used for dyeing and printing synthetic textiles, e.g. polyester, polyamide and acrylonitrile fabrics.
