Silencer for exhaust gas with entrained solid particles - has partitions angled to build up particle layer for proper functioning and reject excess

The silencer is for exhaust gas with entrained solid particles and consists of a casing with a through duct (1). On two opposed sides, transverse partitions (4) are at equal, obtuse angles to the approaching gas stream. Chambers (2, 3) so formed have different depth and spacing on different sides. Perforated metal sheet, or wire mesh, gratings which are acoustically transparent cover the open ends. Particle layers (7) of thickness required for silencer proper functioning quickly build up on the partitions. The slope prevents further, detrimental build-up. Surplus particles are carried back into the main gas stream. Casing surfaces not subject to deposition may have a silencing lining.
