The cleaning appts. comprises a fluid bath with separate discharge devices for the floating and sinking chips and a separating device for separating the sinking chips from heavy foreign bodies wherein the sinking chips are driven along above a discharge opening (6) at the base of a fluid container by a conveyor pump (8) which produces a circulating current and is designed as a discharge pump. The pressure line (29) of the pump is guided towards a dewatering device (18) whilst beneath the discharge opening (6) screened off from the circulating current a mechanical discharge conveyor (7) is fitted to automatically raise up the foreign bodies above the level of the fluid. The sinking chips are exposed to the circulating current and thus moved about for a longer time which means they are washed more thoroughly. Since the foreign bodies are removed automatically the operating costs are reduced. The pump is pref. a centrifugal pump with a rotor (25) which rotates substantially free or contact with the sinking chips.
