Anhydrous Na acetylsalicylate (I) as plate-like crystals is prepd. by mixing a concd. aq. soln. of (I) (1-2.5 pts. per 1 pt. water) gradually and thoroughly with a 3-4C satd. aliphatic alcohol (5-10 pts. per 1 pt. (I)) at -10 degrees to 10 degrees C to ppte. (I) dihydrate, and dehydrating this dihydrate. Prod. has high storage stability and is free-flowing, non-caking and readily compressible, so that tablets etc. can be prepd. directly without grinding and compacting.
