The bulkhead supports on each side of the hold of the ship (10) are provided with tracks for driving along a gantry crane during loading or off loading. When the crane is positioned over the loading space the lifting of the load from the ship or lower of the load in the ship is carried out at least partly in the location of the load. The tracks along which the crane is driven are connected by ramps with land or a harbour quay. The tracks are fitted with an adjusting mechanism for adjusting their height in line with the land or quay level when the water level fluctuates.
