Procedure is for automatically joining a thread end attached to a winding off spool and a thread end attached to a winding-on spool of an automatic spool machine. The ends are joined by an automatic thread searching and thread knotting device (I) which if required is also used for controlling the change of winding-off spools. The drive of (I) is at the beginning of the spool change retarded and after completion of the spool change accelerated again. The retardation is carried out up to a stand still. The drive of (I) is provided with a retardation equipment consisting of a braking equipment and with an accelerating equipment consisting of a brake-releasing equipment and a switching-on equipment.
