Olefines are polymerized in the presence of a liquid catalyst comprising aluminium halide and an aliphatic ester containing 4 or more carbon atoms per mol such that the ratio AlX3/ester > 1/1. Specified olefines are ethylene, butene-1, isobutene, hexene, octene-2, 2-ethylhexene-1, decene-2, decene-1, undecene-1, dodecene-1, hexadecene-1, octadecene-1, octadecene-9, eicosene, tricosene-1, tetracosene-1 and triacontene-1.ALSO:A polymerisation catalyst comprises a normally liquid aliphatic ester of a fatty acid containing a total of at least 4C per ester molecule having dissolved therein more than 1 mole of aluminium halide per mole of ester. AlCl3, AlBr3, AlI3 and AlF3 are all specified, the first mentioned being preferred. Specified esters are ethyl acetate, ethyl propionate, ethyl palmitate, butyl oleate, and methyl caprylate. |
