Automatic character classification system - using partial characteristic matching in logical series of operations to read handwritten input sheets

The method for automati classification of characters enables the characters to be identified to be matched fully or in their essential parts with the corresp. normal or reference characters without extensive operations, thus making practicable the handling of large number of handwritten sheets. Characteristics to be identified are read into stores. Reference characters are held in separate stores. Character data is evaluated for presence and/or position of specific characteristics. Successive operations depend logically on the results of preceding tests. Adjustments are made to allow for character deformation of various types until an adequate match with a reference character is obtd.
