In order to improve the heat transfer, the heat exchange tube (10) is provided inside and outside with helically extending depressions (14a, 14b) and protuberances (16a, 16b). As a result, the flow properties of the fluid flowing outside and inside on the tube wall can be influenced in such a way that a better heat exchange takes place. In order to produce the tube (10), a flat strip is firstly provided in the longitudinal direction with a corresponding profile and afterwards wound helically about a mandrel. The juxtaposed strip edges (22, 24) are interconnected in a manner which is tight with respect to the flow medium. <IMAGE>
